Mateta suggests he could leave Crystal Palace

Jean-Philippe Mateta has hinted that his time at Crystal Palace may be nearing its end, as the in-form striker eyes a move to a club competing in the Champions League and chasing major trophies.

⚽ Ambition Beyond Selhurst Park

Speaking to RMC Sport while on international duty with France, Mateta—who recently earned his first senior call-up—was asked whether he’s ready to “move up a gear” in his career. His response was telling:

“It’s natural, every ambitious player wants to reach that milestone. Especially when you arrive in the national team and around you, there are only players who play in the Champions League, who win the biggest trophies.”

The 28-year-old has been a standout performer for Palace over the past two seasons, scoring 30 Premier League goals and helping the club win their first-ever FA Cup title. His rise has earned him admiration across Europe, and now, with his international profile growing, Mateta appears to be setting his sights higher.

🔥 Transfer Interest Heating Up

According to reports from Caught Offside, several Premier League clubs—including Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Leeds United—have made Mateta a top target for the upcoming winter transfer window. Palace are reportedly holding out for a fee in the region of £40 million ($54m).

He was also linked with Tottenham and Manchester United over the summer, though no formal bids materialized.

🦅 Palace’s Position

Despite Mateta’s comments, Crystal Palace are unlikely to sanction a mid-season exit unless a substantial offer arrives. The club is currently flying high in the Premier League and competing in Europe, which may help convince Mateta to stay through the season.

However, with only two years left on his contract and growing interest from top clubs, Palace may face a tough decision in January.

🇫🇷 France Debut Incoming?

Mateta is expected to make his debut for Les Bleus in one of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Iceland. Surrounded by stars like Kylian Mbappé and Aurélien Tchouaméni, the striker’s desire to join Europe’s elite is understandable.

“When you play surrounded by the best players in the world, naturally you want to reach that milestone,” he added.

🧠 What This Means

Mateta’s comments don’t confirm an imminent exit, but they do signal a shift in mindset. For Palace fans, it’s a bittersweet moment—watching a club hero grow into a top-tier talent, while knowing his ambitions may soon take him elsewhere.
