Tottenham Hotspur head coach Thomas Frank has hailed Micky van de Ven as a future cornerstone of the club, following the Dutch defender’s standout performances in the Premier League and domestic cup competitions. Van de Ven, 24, scored twice in Spurs’ 3–0 win over Everton, taking his tally to five goals in 13 appearances this season and solidifying his role as a defensive leader in the absence of Cristian Romero.
“He’s still very good on the ball, and he’s added goals and headed goals, which I’m very happy with,” Frank told reporters. “Character and leadership also growing… definitely a player I see with a big future at the club.”
🧱 Defensive Anchor
Since Romero’s injury in early September, Van de Ven has stepped up with commanding performances. His pace, aerial dominance, and composure under pressure have made him indispensable in Frank’s evolving back three system. Against Everton, he not only scored twice but also registered six clearances, three interceptions, and a 92% pass completion rate.
Frank praised Van de Ven’s ability to adapt tactically, noting his comfort in both a high line and deeper blocks.
“He’s tactically flexible and physically elite. That’s rare,” Frank said.
🧠 Tactical Evolution
Frank’s Spurs have shifted toward a more possession-based style, with Van de Ven often initiating build-up play from the back. His diagonal passing and ability to break lines have added a new dimension to Tottenham’s transitions.
The Dutchman’s chemistry with fullbacks Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro has also improved, allowing Spurs to press higher and recover quickly.
🧲 Transfer Interest & Contract Security
Reports from Spain suggest Real Madrid are monitoring Van de Ven’s progress, but Frank remains unfazed.
“He really enjoys his football here. Everyone is really happy, so that’s a good sign,” Frank said.
Van de Ven signed a long-term deal in 2023, and Spurs are reportedly preparing to offer improved terms to reflect his growing importance.
🏆 Leadership Role
With Romero sidelined, Van de Ven is expected to captain Spurs in their upcoming League Cup clash against Newcastle, a sign of Frank’s trust in his leadership.
“He’s not just playing well—he’s influencing others,” Frank added.
🔮 What’s Next?
Spurs sit third in the Premier League, five points behind leaders Arsenal. With Van de Ven anchoring the defense, Frank’s side look poised for a sustained top-four push and a deep cup run.
