German football legend Michael Ballack has backed Florian Wirtz's decision to join Liverpool instead of Bayern Munich, calling it "the perfect move for his development." The former Chelsea and Bayern midfielder believes the 23-year-old Bayer Leverkusen star has made the right choice for his career progression by opting for the Premier League over the Bundesliga champions.
Wirtz, who completed his £85 million move to Anfield during the summer transfer window, had been heavily pursued by Bayern Munich as they sought to continue their tradition of recruiting Germany's top talents. However, the attacking midfielder chose Arne Slot's Liverpool project instead, signing a five-year contract with the Merseyside club.
"Liverpool offers Wirtz exactly what he needs at this stage of his career," Ballack told Sky Germany. "The Premier League's intensity and Slot's attacking philosophy will push him to new heights. At Bayern, there's always the expectation to win everything immediately, whereas at Liverpool, he'll have more space to grow while still competing at the highest level."
The 23-year-old creative midfielder has made an immediate impact at Liverpool, registering three assists and one goal in his first four Premier League appearances. His seamless adaptation to English football has already drawn comparisons to fellow German Mesut Özil's early impact at Arsenal.
