We Need to Manage Him' | Maresca on FA Charges and Palmer, Garnacho Fitness

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca addressed a whirlwind of issues in his pre-Brentford press conference today, including the club's staggering 74 FA charges spanning 2009-2022, star man Cole Palmer's ongoing groin injury, and the integration of new signing Alejandro Garnacho. The Italian manager stressed a measured approach, saying "we need to manage him" in reference to Palmer's fitness, as the Blues prepare for Saturday's west London derby.

The FA charges, primarily from the 2010/11 to 2015/16 seasons, cover a range of allegations that could impact Chelsea's standing, though Maresca downplayed immediate concerns: "It's historical; we focus on the present." Palmer, Chelsea's talismanic attacker who missed the recent 2-0 win over Fulham, participated in a partial training session yesterday but remains a doubt for Brentford. "Cole took part yesterday for the first time... we're going to try with him to see if he's okay, otherwise he will be out tomorrow," Maresca revealed, underscoring the need for careful management to avoid further setbacks.
On a brighter note, Maresca confirmed Alejandro Garnacho's arrival from Manchester United for £40 million, with the 21-year-old Argentine winger in contention for a debut off the bench. "I know he is around here," Maresca said, praising Garnacho's potential as "one of the best bits of business" in recent years. The former United star, who sat in the stands during the Fulham match, could provide vital depth amid injuries to Benoit Badiashile and Romeo Lavia. Chelsea, unbeaten in their opening three games, sit comfortably in the top four, but Maresca warned of transfer window unpredictability: "Anything can happen, in and out." With the international break behind them, the Blues aim to maintain momentum against Brentford.
