Liverpool boss Arne Slot didn’t mince words after Hugo Ekitike’s bizarre red card in the Carabao Cup win over Southampton. The striker scored the winner in the 85th minute, then removed his shirt in celebration—despite already being booked.
Slot called the incident “needless and stupid,” adding: “If you score in a Champions League final, maybe I understand. But this was not about him—it was about Chiesa’s assist.”
Ekitike apologized on social media, but his suspension means he’ll miss Liverpool’s trip to Crystal Palace. With Alexander Isak also scoring, Ekitike may find himself benched even after returning.
