Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has clarified his decision to substitute Cole Palmer early in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, revealing the forward was “not 100% fit” due to a lingering groin issue.
Palmer, who had passed a fitness test on the morning of the match, was withdrawn after just 21 minutes. The move sparked criticism from fans, especially as Chelsea struggled to create chances following his exit. Maresca explained, “He made an effort to play, but we knew he wasn’t fully fit. We had to protect him.”
The Blues were already reeling from Robert Sanchez’s fifth-minute red card, which forced tactical reshuffling. Estevao Willian and Pedro Neto were also subbed early to accommodate a goalkeeper and defensive cover.
Palmer’s injury dates back to pre-season and kept him out of England’s September qualifiers. While he remains one of Chelsea’s most creative outlets, his fitness issues are becoming a concern. He’s scored just one non-penalty goal in his last 19 Premier League appearances.
Chelsea’s form is also under scrutiny. With only two wins in six matches, they sit seven points behind leaders Liverpool. Maresca, backed heavily in the transfer market, is facing questions about squad cohesion and tactical flexibility.
Sanchez’s red card has reignited debate over Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation. Many fans feel the club missed an opportunity to sign a more reliable No. 1 during the summer window.
As for Palmer, his recovery will be closely monitored. Chelsea needs him firing on all cylinders if they’re to mount a serious challenge this season.
