Onana Error Sees Cameroon WC Qualification Hopes Dented

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana's costly mistake has left Cameroon's World Cup qualification hopes hanging by a thread after a shock 1-0 defeat to Cape Verde.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper, who has already been dropped from United's starting lineup in their first three Premier League matches, remained rooted to his line as Cape Verde's Dailon Livramento surged through on goal in the 54th minute and slotted home with ease.

Onana's decision-making was questioned by analysts who noted he had ample time to rush out and narrow the angle but instead chose to stay on his line—a recurring issue that has plagued his time at Old Trafford since joining from Inter Milan in 2023.

The defeat leaves Cameroon in a precarious position in their qualification group, while Cape Verde are now just one win away from reaching their first-ever World Cup finals.

Adding to the drama, Onana was involved in a post-match incident when he shoved away a pitch-invading fan who approached him following the final whistle, with reports suggesting the supporter then threw a water bottle at the goalkeeper.

This performance comes as Onana is reportedly set to join Turkish club Trabzonspor on a season-long loan, having fallen further down the pecking order at United following the deadline day arrival of goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18 million.
