West Ham United are reportedly in advanced discussions with Nuno Espírito Santo as pressure mounts on current manager Graham Potter following a string of poor results. The Hammers’ 2-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace marked their fourth loss in five Premier League matches, leaving them 18th in the table and sparking serious concerns about Potter’s future.
According to multiple reports, West Ham’s hierarchy—led by vice-chair Karren Brady—has already held talks with Nuno, who recently parted ways with Nottingham Forest after a breakdown in his relationship with ownership. The Portuguese coach, known for his tactical discipline and defensive organization, is seen as a strong candidate to stabilize the club amid growing unrest.
Potter, who took over in January following Julen Lopetegui’s departure, has won just six of his 25 matches in charge. Despite backing from the board, including a recent vote of confidence, fan frustration has reached boiling point. Chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” echoed through the London Stadium during the Palace defeat, and the club’s Fan Advisory Board has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current trajectory.⁴..
The loss to Palace was emblematic of West Ham’s struggles. Defensive lapses at set pieces, lack of midfield control, and over-reliance on Jarrod Bowen continue to plague the team. Tyrick Mitchell’s late screamer sealed the win for Palace, leaving Potter visibly dejected post-match. “It’s a tough moment, for sure,” he admitted, while insisting he still felt supported by the board.
West Ham’s next fixture—away to Everton on September 29—could be decisive. A loss may trigger Potter’s dismissal, with Nuno waiting in the wings. Other names reportedly on the shortlist include former Hammers boss Slaven Bilic and ex-Wolves manager Gary O’Neil. Bilic, who coached the club from 2015 to 2017, is said to be favored by chairman David Sullivan, while O’Neil’s recent experience at Wolves and Bournemouth adds depth to the options.
Interestingly, Jose Mourinho was previously recommended by former scout Mick Brown, but the legendary coach has since taken charge of Benfica.
For Nuno, a return to the Premier League could be timely. He led Forest to Europa League qualification last season and has prior experience with Wolves and Tottenham. His pragmatic style may suit a West Ham squad in need of structure and confidence.
As the managerial saga unfolds, one thing is clear: West Ham cannot afford to drift further. Whether Potter is given one last chance or Nuno steps in, the next few days could shape the club’s entire season.
