‘Unacceptable’ Defensive Tactics: Fenerbahce President Reveals Real Reason Behind Mourinho’s Sacking

Fenerbahçe president Ali Koç has finally broken his silence on José Mourinho’s dismissal, revealing that the Portuguese manager’s defensive tactical approach was deemed “unacceptable” for a club with ambitious offensive goals.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester United manager was relieved of his duties following what Koc described as a “bitter parting” between the club and the high-profile coach. The decision came shortly after Fenerbahçe’s elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Portuguese side Benfica.

“It’s not a problem to be eliminated by Benfica, but it’s unacceptable to go out in this way,” Koc stated in a press conference on Monday. The club president went on to explain that Fenerbahçe’s board had set lofty targets for the season, aiming for 99 points and 99 goals in their domestic campaign—objectives that clashed with Mourinho’s traditionally cautious approach.

The Champions League exit proved to be the final straw in what sources close to the club describe as growing tension between the manager and leadership over playing style. While Mourinho has built his reputation on pragmatic, defensively solid teams that often grind out results, Fenerbahce’s hierarchy was pushing for a more dominant, attack-minded philosophy that would excite fans and overwhelm opponents.

“We respect Jose’s achievements and his status in world football,” Koc added. “However, there was a clear strategic misalignment between his vision and the club’s aspirations. Fenerbahce needs to play with authority and attacking flair—that’s what our supporters expect and deserve.”

The dismissal marks another short-lived stint for Mourinho, who joined the Turkish giants with much fanfare less than a year ago. The 62-year-old manager has yet to comment publicly on his departure, though his representatives have indicated he is already considering new opportunities.

Fenerbahçe is expected to announce Mourinho’s replacement within the coming days, with several attack-minded coaches reportedly on their shortlist as the club looks to realign with their ambitious offensive targets for the 2025-26 season.
