Messi had a golden chance to put Miami ahead in the 32nd minute after VAR awarded a penalty for a foul inside the box. The Argentine icon opted for a cheeky Panenka-style finish, but Charlotte keeper Kristijan Kahlina read it perfectly and made the save. Just seconds later, Charlotte punished Miami’s lapse in focus with Idan Toklomati scoring the opener from a swift counterattack.
Toklomati wasn’t done. He added a second early in the second half and completed his hat trick from the spot after Tomas Aviles was sent off for a second yellow card. With Luis Suárez suspended, Miami lacked firepower and composure, slipping further down the Eastern Conference standings.
