Benfica are preparing an ambitious January move for Manchester City star Bernardo Silva, with club president Rui Costa reportedly telling confidants that "a contract is waiting" for the Portuguese international. The Lisbon giants are hoping to convince the 32-year-old to return to his boyhood club during the winter transfer window.
Silva, whose contract with City expires in June 2026, has been a key figure in Pep Guardiola's side since joining from Monaco in 2017. However, with playing time reduced this season and his family reportedly keen on returning to Portugal, Benfica believes the timing is perfect for a sensational homecoming.
According to sources close to the Lisbon club, Benfica are prepared to make Silva their highest-paid player ever, with a contract that would include a future ambassadorial role. The midfielder began his career in Benfica's academy before leaving for Monaco in 2014 without establishing himself in the first team.
Guardiola addressed the speculation in today's press conference: "Bernardo is a phenomenal player and person. Of course, we want him to stay, but I understand if at some point he wants to return home. These decisions are personal, and we will respect whatever he decides."
