Bad News for Nigeria & Benin as FIFA Issues Disciplinary Sanctions for World Cup Qualifiers

FIFA has released a wave of disciplinary sanctions affecting several nations in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers—and it’s bad news for Nigeria and Benin Republic.

Both countries had been lobbying FIFA to dock South Africa three points for fielding Teboho Mokoena, who was suspended due to accumulated yellow cards, in a 2–0 win over Lesotho. However, FIFA’s latest ruling does not include South Africa on the sanction list.

This decision leaves Bafana Bafana top of Group C with 17 points, while Benin sits on 14 and Nigeria trails with 11. With just two matches remaining, the Super Eagles and the Cheetahs now face an uphill battle to qualify.

FIFA did issue fines and sanctions to other nations, including Argentina, Chile, and Serbia, for fan misconduct and racism, but South Africa escaped punishment due to a lack of formal complaints.

Benin coach Gernot Rohr expressed frustration, saying:

“The rules are very clear. What are they waiting for? It is incomprehensible.”
