Wolves Secure Girona’s Ladislav Krejčí in €35m Deal to Bolster Defense

Wolverhampton Wanderers have finalized a significant transfer coup, agreeing to a deal with Girona for Czech defender Ladislav Krejčí in a package worth close to €35 million, as confirmed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The 26-year-old, who joined Girona from Sparta Prague last summer for €8 million, is set to become Wolves’ most expensive signing of the summer, signaling the club’s ambition to strengthen their backline under manager Vítor Pereira.
Krejčí, a versatile left-footed defender capable of playing as a center-back or defensive midfielder, made 36 appearances for Girona in the 2024-25 season, scoring twice and providing one assist. Despite Girona’s struggles in La Liga, where they finished 16th, Krejčí stood out with his physicality, aerial dominance (69.6% aerial duels won), and progressive passing (144 progressive passes last season). His seven Champions League appearances last term also highlight his ability to perform on big stages.
The deal, which includes a fixed fee of around €30 million plus bonuses, sees Girona make a substantial profit on the Czech international, who has already agreed to personal terms with Wolves.
This move comes as Wolves aim to address defensive vulnerabilities exposed in their 4-0 opening-day loss to Manchester City. With key players like Matheus Cunha, Rayan Aït-Nouri, and Nelson Semedo departing this summer, Pereira has prioritized reinforcing the squad, with Krejčí joining new arrivals like Jhon Arias, Fer López, Jackson Tchatchoua, and David Moller Wolfe.
Wolves’ pursuit of Krejčí, who was described as a “superb player” by scout Jacek Kulig in 2022, underscores their intent to build a robust defense. His versatility and set-piece prowess—having scored 44 goals across his career at Sparta Prague and Girona—make him a valuable addition. Fans will hope Krejčí can slot straight into the starting XI, potentially on the left of a back three alongside Toti Gomes and Emmanuel Agbadou, replacing Matt Doherty’s makeshift role.
With the transfer window nearing its close, Wolves are moving quickly to finalize the deal, with Krejčí expected to undergo a medical in the coming days. The signing represents a bold statement as Wolves look to climb the Premier League table and avoid a repeat of last season’s struggles.
