Rooney Calls for Tougher Sanctions to Combat Racism in Football

Wayne Rooney has spoken—and football needs to listen.

On his BBC podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, the former England and Manchester United captain made an impassioned plea for stronger action against racist abuse in football. His message? Fines and points deductions are the only way to make clubs accountable and drive real change.

Rooney shared a heartbreaking moment from his time managing DC United, where a player broke down in tears after suffering racist abuse. “I was holding him as he cried on my chest,” Rooney recalled. “People say things as throwaway lines, but they hurt. They really hurt.”

His comments come after two recent incidents:

  • Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo was allegedly abused by a spectator at Anfield.

  • Tottenham’s Mathys Tel received online abuse after missing a penalty.

Rooney believes education alone isn’t enough. “You have to hit the clubs—take points off or hit them in the pocket. Otherwise, it will keep on going,” he said.

He’s calling for:

  • 📉 Points deductions to penalize clubs directly.

  • 💸 Financial fines to create economic consequences.

  • 🧠 Education campaigns targeting fans, families, and communities.

Rooney’s stance is clear: racism in football won’t end until clubs are held responsible. His words are a wake-up call for governing bodies and fans alike.

“Do you agree with Rooney’s stance?”
