Jeremie Frimpong Sidelined Until After International Break

Liverpool FC have been dealt a significant blow with the news that their summer signing, Jeremie Frimpong, will be out of action until after the September international break due to a hamstring injury. The 24-year-old Dutch right-back, who joined the Reds from Bayer Leverkusen for £30 million, suffered the injury during his Premier League debut in Liverpool’s 4-2 victory over Bournemouth on August 15, 2025.

Manager Arne Slot confirmed the injury in a press conference, praising the medical team’s decision to substitute Frimpong in the 60th minute of the match. “The medical team was completely right about Jeremie to take him off because he's out until the end of the international break,” Slot said. “It was a good call to take him off, otherwise he could have been out for even longer.”Frimpong’s absence will see him miss crucial upcoming Premier League fixtures against Newcastle United on Monday and Arsenal on August 31. The injury compounds Liverpool’s challenges at the right-back position, with Conor Bradley only recently returning to training after his own injury, and Joe Gomez still recovering from an Achilles issue sustained during pre-season. Slot indicated that Gomez’s readiness for the Newcastle clash remains uncertain, stating, “Joe Gomez hasn’t had a setback, but he wasn’t able to train three days in a row. We will see where he is on Monday.”With limited options, Slot may turn to unconventional solutions, such as deploying midfielders Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, or Curtis Jones at right-back. The manager also hinted at the possibility of using new centre-back signing Giovanni Leoni in the role, as he did with Jarell Quansah in a previous match. “We have only two injuries at the moment, but unfortunately, it’s two in the same position,” Slot noted. “The good thing is some others can play in that position as well.”Frimpong, known for his pace and attacking contributions, had impressed fans during pre-season and was expected to fill the void left by Trent Alexander-Arnold, who departed for Real Madrid. Despite this setback, Slot remains optimistic about Frimpong’s recovery, citing his strong injury record, having missed only four Bundesliga games over the past three seasons with Leverkusen.Liverpool fans will be hoping for a swift recovery as the team aims to maintain their strong start to the 2025-26 Premier League season, with challenging fixtures looming. The international break, following the Arsenal match, will provide Frimpong with additional recovery time, with an expected return in mid-September.
