Harry Maguire Reveals Manchester United Rebuffed Transfer Enquiries

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has confirmed that the club turned down multiple inquiries from other teams regarding his availability during the summer transfer window. Speaking at a Manchester United Foundation holiday camp at Stretford High School, the 32-year-old center-back expressed his commitment to the Red Devils while hinting at his desire to extend his contract, which is set to expire in June 2026 after United triggered a one-year extension in January 2025.

Maguire, who joined United from Leicester City in 2019 for a then-world-record £80 million fee for a defender, has experienced a rollercoaster tenure at Old Trafford. Despite losing the captaincy in 2023 under former manager Erik ten Hag and facing intense scrutiny, Maguire has fought his way back into contention under current head coach Ruben Amorim. His aerial dominance, physical presence, and recent resurgence—highlighted by a dramatic late winner in a 5-4 Europa League quarter-final victory against Lyon in April—have made him a key figure in United’s squad.“I’m pretty sure the club made it clear this summer that I can’t leave on any terms with other clubs enquiring about my position with my contract,” Maguire said, as reported by ESPN. “I think there were a couple of clubs who maybe inquired or spoke with them, and they got a quick response.”The England international, with 64 caps, revealed that three Premier League clubs and two Italian sides, including Napoli, Fenerbahce, and Galatasaray, expressed interest in him, but United’s hierarchy swiftly dismissed any potential moves. Maguire’s preference is to remain at Old Trafford, where he believes the club is heading in the right direction under Amorim and sporting director Jason Wilcox. “We’re in a good place, positive as a club, and I feel like the hierarchy has come in and they’re taking it in the right direction,” he added. With his contract entering its final year, Maguire can negotiate with non-Premier League clubs starting January 1, 2026, if no new deal is reached. However, he remains optimistic about his future at United, stating, “I’m sure over the next few months they’ll sit down, and we’ll have to have a conversation about where we want to go and if they want to extend.”Maguire’s resilience has won over many United fans, especially after overcoming online abuse and criticism in recent years. His experience could prove vital as United aim to nurture young defenders like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, while the club looks to rebound from a disappointing 15th-place finish in the 2024-25 Premier League season. As Manchester United prepare for a challenging 2025-26 campaign, including a Premier League opener against Arsenal, Maguire’s leadership and defensive solidity will be crucial. For now, the Sheffield-born defender remains firmly committed to the Red Devils, ready to fight for his place and contribute to the club’s ambitions.
