Esther Okoronkwo’s Ballon d’Or Destiny Feels Inevitable

Esther Okoronkwo’s performance at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) wasn’t just brilliant—it was historic. And if her trajectory continues, a Ballon d’Or nomination is no longer a dream, but a matter of time.

The AFC Toronto striker was the heartbeat of Nigeria’s comeback victory over Morocco in the WAFCON final, scoring once and delivering two assists in a 3-2 thriller that crowned the Super Falcons African champions once again. Her tournament tally included six assists and multiple clutch goals, making her arguably the most influential player of the campaign.

Despite being overlooked for this year’s Ballon d’Or shortlist, Okoronkwo’s impact has not gone unnoticed. She was honored by President Bola Tinubu and Governor Alex Otti, received a national cash reward and housing, and was named Fans’ Player of the Tournament.

Her journey—from tearing both ACLs to leading Nigeria to continental glory—is a testament to resilience. “Even when I tore my ACL two times, in both legs, I never gave up,” she told ESPN.

With upcoming campaigns including another WAFCON, the World Cup, and the 2028 Olympics, Okoronkwo is entering her prime. If she continues to deliver magic like she did in Morocco, her name will be etched among the elite in global football.
