West Ham United have confirmed that Mexican international Edson Álvarez has joined Turkish giants Fenerbahçe on a season-long loan, with an option to make the move permanent next summer.
Álvarez, 27, arrived at the London Stadium from Ajax in 2023 for £35 million and quickly became a key figure in midfield. He made 73 appearances across all competitions, including 28 in the Premier League last season. However, with game time limited under new manager Graham Potter, Álvarez has opted for a fresh start in Istanbul.
The move reunites Álvarez with José Mourinho, who is overseeing a major rebuild at Fenerbahçe. The Turkish club is pushing for domestic dominance and a deep run in Europe, and Álvarez’s experience and defensive solidity could prove vital.
With a home World Cup on the horizon in 2026, Álvarez will be eager to regain form and consistency in Turkey. His departure also opens the door for West Ham to accelerate their midfield recruitment, with Soungoutou Magassa among the names linked to the club.
