Liverpool may have opened their Premier League campaign with a 4–2 win over Bournemouth, but club legend Jamie Carragher wasn’t celebrating. Instead, he delivered a scathing assessment of the Reds’ defensive performance, warning that if things don’t improve, they won’t retain their title.
Speaking on Friday Night Football, Carragher described Liverpool’s defending as “absolutely shocking” and “unbelievable,” particularly during Bournemouth’s second goal, where Antoine Semenyo ran nearly the length of the pitch unchallenged.
“How many players were ahead of the ball—maybe eight—when they were winning 2–1? That can’t happen. It’s absolutely shocking at this level,” Carragher said.
He also singled out Ibrahima Konaté for a poor showing, questioning his positioning and decision-making. Carragher’s concerns weren’t limited to this match—he pointed to similar defensive lapses in pre-season games against AC Milan, Athletic Club, and Crystal Palace.
Manager Arne Slot now faces mounting pressure to fix Liverpool’s defensive structure. Despite late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah sealing the win, Carragher’s verdict was clear: Liverpool won’t win the league defending like this.
