Ugarte needs to hit the ground running

Ten Hag stated on Sunday that although it might take "months" for the new player to adjust to life in the Premier League, he will need the Uruguayan international sooner.

Casemiro's awful performance against Liverpool highlighted the problems in the midfield base. They now lack the intensity, enthusiasm, and ball-winning skills of Ugarte.

Ten Hag may not have much opportunity to work with him on the training field during the international break, as Ugarte is anticipated to go to South America for Uruguay's World Cup qualifying matches against Paraguay and Venezuela. Nevertheless, getting him up to speed must be a top priority.

More importantly, though, is that Ten Hag's scheme will make it very impossible for Ugarte to address the team's defensive shortcomings. With all of Arne Slot's team's goals coming from turnovers within the United half, the Liverpool match brought to light United's ongoing issues with openness in transition under Ten Hag.

Casemiro made costly errors for Liverpool's first two goals

The same candor versus Brighton and Fulham was evident. In terms of transition opportunities afforded to their opponents this season, United is ranked fourth in the division; the only team that has conceded more transitions ending in the final third or the box is Newcastle.

Ugarte, who is 23 years old and nine years younger than Casemiro, will provide much-needed bite to the role. In the last two seasons, the main leagues in Europe have seen more tackles per ninety minutes than anyone else save Joao Palhinha. However, Ten Hag needs to modify both his staff and his system.

Finishing problems need to be fixed.
It isn't for lack of opportunities—Manchester United has only scored twice in their opening three Premier League games. In actuality, they come in sixth place for anticipated goals. They have the highest negative xG differential in the division as a result of their poor finishing.
