Mitchell defends the first transfer window for Newcastle

Paul Mitchell, the sporting director of Newcastle, has defended his first transfer window at the team after failing to get Crystal Palace's top target, Marc Guehi.

Newcastle made several offers for Guehi, the most recent of which was accepted by Palace and totaled £65 million with add-ons.

Mitchell also failed when it became apparent that Palace would not sell Guehi, trying to get Anthony Elanga of Nottingham Forest on Deadline Day.

Although it means Eddie Howe hasn't added any players to his first team that would likely improve it, Mitchell is adamant that it was the best move for Newcastle's long term.

"Is there a value point for each and every player, and did this football team need to make a clear statement that we won't overpay?" Mitchell asked.

Considering the players we have acquired—many of them are excellent additions—could we argue that some of them may have come at a higher price than the market warranted given the circumstances at the time? It's possible that you could argue and discuss that.

"Is it really at any cost for this club to come out and say, 'Actually, we really liked this player and thought he could have brought benefit to this squad?'" Is there a financial danger to the company, our expansion, and our plan?

"It's not something I think we should do. That is an individual decision. Although others may disagree, I do take that aspect of my work seriously.

"Would it have been simpler to stand in front of you all with hefty, expensive signatures? Naturally, it would. However, having them ultimately hurt Newcastle's capacity to develop and its lofty strategic goals for Paul Mitchell's exaltation is not my paid duty.

"I get paid to do this work for the next three, five, and ten years."
