Ten Hag's team has squandered nine excellent opportunities in all, which is tied for most in the division with Liverpool, their opponents on Sunday. The distinction is that United continues to have zero great opportunities scored, while Liverpool leads the league with seven.

brand-new signing Since his game-winning goal against Fulham in the first round, Joshua Zirkzee has been wasteful, but this is a team effort as Zirkzee is one of three players who have missed at least two significant opportunities, along with Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes.

After this international break, key players Luke Shaw and Hojlund should be available again, and a few favorable home and European games present an opportunity to regain some momentum.

However, United and Ten Hag need to establish a foundation before concluding their upcoming slate of matches against Tottenham, Porto, and Aston Villa. Given United's start and the caliber of both teams, losing those league games back-to-back is not impossible, but it would put a lot of pressure on heading into the October international break.

Ten Hag cannot afford to have United at mid-table at Christmas, according to Gary Neville's comments on Sunday. In September, however, a constructive change needs to begin if Ten Hag is to set the stage for a season of significant and genuine advancement.
